ACCRA, Ghana (SCANS) — The Ghanaian government officially announced Monday that the nation’s primary gateway, Kotoka International Airport, has been renamed Accra International Airport, effective immediately.
The Ministry of Transport confirmed the decision in a press statement on Feb. 23, 2026, describing the move as a restoration of the facility’s “former and internationally recognized name.”
The airport originally operated as Accra International Airport for over a decade before it was redesignated in 1969 to honor Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in the 1966 coup that overthrew Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
Historical and Cultural Context
The decision follows months of legislative preparation and public debate. Earlier in February, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga informed Parliament that the renaming was part of a “resetting agenda” aimed at honoring the Ga people, the indigenous custodians of the land on which the airport sits.
For years, civil society groups and descendants of the Nkrumah era had called for the removal of Kotoka’s name, arguing that a national landmark should not commemorate a military leader associated with the subversion of democracy.
